Near Fowler, California, a terrified dog waited near her dead companion at the side of a busy road. When a Good Samaritan contacted Pinky Paws Search and ResQ, Krystal Woodward and her husband rushed to the area on Friday afternoon to evaluate the situation.

As soon as they arrived, the dog Ziggy ran away, and the busy traffic put everyone at risk. Woodward’s husband worked fast; he procured hamburgers for bait, put up the humane trap and set up a camera. And then they watched and waited, but Ziggy was smart, and although she wanted the hamburger, she had no intention of being trapped  and cautiously circled the area over and over.

“Ziggy was terrified when certain cars and semis passed,” Krystal wrote on social media, recounting the 12-hour rescue operation it took to finally capture the pup. “After several attempts we made our plan to bring the deceased friend into orchards away from the road…We rebaited with chicken. Traffic came and Ziggy almost got hit several times. My heart dropped.

We hurried and left. She went right back, At first she tried again. Same method … circling. Ziggy would even look up at the trap door. Smart cookie! We were on pins and needles watching.”

When Ziggy got frustrated, she returned to her dead friend and tried to wake her to play. She never left her friend’s side. And then she tried again; she wanted that chicken so badly; actually reaching over the trigger for the trap with her paw. Coyotes were close by, and when Ziggy heard them, she panicked again.

It took 12 hours and chicken used as bait to capture Ziggy. Finally she triggered the trap.

Ziggy was transported to the Kingsburg Veterinary Clinic where she trembled throughout her exam. She was sedated and shaved; less trauma.

Stickers had been embedded in her face and so close to her eyes, her vision had been affected. Both dogs had ropes around their necks. It is not known where they may have lived or how long they had been strays and on their own.

Ziggy’s friend was buried at Pinky Paws.

Ziggy will have a long journey to recovery, but Woodward and the volunteers who support Pinky Paws Search and ResQ are more than happy to be there every step of the way for this pup.
