Teen stabbed family cockatiel in fit of rage banned from owning animals

In Sunderland, England, a teenager has been banned from owning any animals after stabbing the family’s pet cockatiel in a fit of rage.

According to the Northumbria Police, press release, Aaron Ray, 18, stabbed the bird in the back of its neck. Authorities found the bird deceased in January after a report of a home disturbance. When asked by police why he killed the pet, Ray stated:

“It’s just a bird; it’s not a crime.”

On Friday, a magistrate in South Tyneside convicted Ray of having caused suffering to an animal.

“Aaron ray showed a total disregard for the welfare of this bird and inflicted catastrophic injuries that if could not survive,” wildlife officer PC Peter Baker stated. “This kind of behavior is not only reckless and upsetting but a criminal offense – and that’s the lesson that Ray now must learn.”

In addition to the 15 year ban on owning or caring for any animals, Ray received a 12-week suspended sentence for one year.
