Teen arrested for leaving dog in hot car while she went shopping

A teen in Covington, Louisiana, was arrested on Thursday after she left her dog inside of a hot, parked car while she went shopping. As reported by WWLT News, the dog belonging to 18-year-old Anna Perez was saved thanks to an alert shopper who discovered the potentially deadly situation.

The good Samaritan called the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office after waiting for 20 minutes for the owner of the car to return. When a deputy arrived, the distressed dog was rescued from the car. The sheriff’s office stated that the dog was panting heavily and was lethargic from its time inside of the vehicle, which registered 115-degrees inside.

Animal control took possession of the dog and provided it with treatment for heat exhaustion and Perez was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail on one count of aggravated animal cruelty.

Dogs cannot be left inside of parked cars on even moderately warm days because the interior temperature can climb to a deadly level in a surprisingly short period of time. Leaving a dog inside of a car for an extended period of time can result in heat stroke, which is deadly. If you see a dog in distress, please contact animal control or the police as soon as possible.
