A Tacoma man, suspected of running an illegal dog-fighting operation, is suing to get his confiscated dogs back. As reported by King 5 News, 40-year-old Elmer Givens Jr. plans to represent himself in an effort to regain custody of the 49 pit bulls which were seized from his Portland Ave. property in December.

The majority of the seized dogs are being held at the Tacoma Humane Society, which is overwhelmed with homeless pets right now. In fact, the shelter currently has over 140 dogs and they are hopeful that members of the public will come forward to adopt. However, the dogs seized from Givens are not yet available for adoption while the court case continues.

The authorities which conducted a search at Givens’ property found evidence of dog fighting, including training tools, first-aid, and medications. The dogs on the property were in poor condition and living in “small cages in the dark, no heat, inside their own urine and feces.”
