In Fort Duchesne, Utah, three puppies suffered for days after they were attacked by porcupines. The dogs were discovered wandering on the Ute reservation – dozens of porcupine quills stuck in their faces, necks and eyes.

According to the non-profit rescue group, Nuzzles & Co, who rescued them, the puppies had been running loose for days with the quills intact. They were rushed to the  Advanced Veterinary Care (AVC) and were put on supportive care, IV fluids and antibiotics to stabilize them and treat the infection and injuries.

The puppies underwent surgery on Friday to remove the quills. Two of the pups sustained permanent damage to one eye each and will need to undergo further surgery to remove the damaged eyes as soon as they are stronger. Two of the puppies have been released and will be recuperating at a foster home.

The third pup will remain at the veterinarian hospital for supportive care; her face is still very swollen from the quills causing a severe infection.

The puppies will continue to be monitored as broken quills can migrate and the only way to remove them is through surgery.
