This is Stark. He was barely surviving living under someone’s house in a rural section of Dallas, Texas. Rescuers had spotted the dog and wanted to help, but had been told the owners didn’t want to surrender him.

Volunteers from ThisIsHouston set out to help on Saturday and went to the home to convince the owners to get Stark help before he died. Sometimes we need patience and compassion:

“When we went to talk to them, they told us they just didn’t want him to get euthanized and were happy to let us get him. He was so gentle and broken. We rushed him straight to Vergi 24/7 where he will stay at least overnight and will reassess from there,” the rescue organization posted on their Facebook page.

And off he went to the emergency veterinarian hospital on Saturday night. Extensive testing and basic procedures were performed including fecal, skin scrape, dewormer, antibiotics, bloodwork, radiographs of his lungs, tear test for his eyes, etc. (Remember emergency room visits for dogs can be many times what one would pay at a veterinarian during regular office hours.)

On Sunday afternoon, Stark was released.

“Bloodwork was pretty good, considering. He’s maintaining his own body temperature and eating well. They did see a foreign material in his abdomen but doesn’t appear to be an obstruction.”

All four of his dew claws had become embedded into his swollen paw pads. He weighs 60 pounds now and is expected to be a “big boy once he’s all healed and healthy.”

“Despite all the pain he’s in, he is still such a sweet boy and a dog’s resilience always amazes us. We can’t wait to see his transformation and share his journey with you all!”

And another amazing chance for a dog that had little hope of a future just one day ago.
