In Kiawah Island, South Carolina, a 58-year-old woman was killed by an alligator as she waded into a pond and tried to pet the reptile. Cynthia Covert reportedly went down to a pond behind the homeowner’s home to get a better look at the gator despite warnings not to get too close.
According to AbcNews, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office stated Cynthia had arrived at the witness’ home to do her nails. The homeowner told Covert the alligator had “grabbed a deer” in the same spot just days before. The victim, standing about four feet from the edge of the water, replied, “I don’t look like a deer” and then tried to touch the gator at which time the reptile grabbed her by the leg and dragged the woman into the water.
Witnesses called police and tried to fight the gator off with a shovel and threw the victim a rope to pull her ashore. When she was waist deep in the pond Covert said she would not do that again, but suddenly the gator pulled her under the water and Covert lost the grip on her life rope.
The alligator was shot in the head by authorities. The autopsy confirmed the woman drowned to death.
“This unfortunate tragedy reminds citizens to be alert and cautious around our Lowcountry wildlife. The Sheriff’s Office urges the public to enjoy the outdoors safely and responsibly,” stated a spokesperson from the sheriff’s office.
