In Abbeville, South Carolina, a couple had been walking their dog on Sunday when they found a critically injured dog lying in the bushes. He couldn’t stand and barely moved; the Abbeville County Animal Services arrived to help.

“EMERGENCY IN ABBEVILLE S.C!!URGENT!!! Rescue needed.
Animal control picked up this dog last night from Narrow Way in Calhoun Falls. He is currently at the vet being stabilized and treated. He is severely dehydrated and emaciated, both eyes are infected, both ears were badly cropped and severely infected, and his entire body is covered in puncture wounds that are infected. He has been very calm and has allowed us and the vet to handle him. He was muzzled as a precaution as he is in a lot of pain but has not shown any aggression. He has not been dog tested.”

Abbeville County Animal Services Director Jessica Bridges, stated the pit bull type breed was dubbed “Soldier” because of what the dog had been through. His ears had been cut off and were severely infected from dirt. His eyes were oozing, closed and badly infected. Almost his entire body was covered in puncture wounds thought to have been caused by dog fighting. Older wounds had scarred over, while new ones continued to bleed.

” He is badly emaciated with bones protruding every which way, dehydrated, anemic and has every type of parasite you can think of. We are THANKFUL to the people that found him. We are THANKFUL for Dr. Gray for taking on these injuries. We are even more THANKFUL that he had the will to live. Soldier is still battling this war, but his rescue is here for him and we will do whatever it takes to ensure he gets what he needs. Prayers and good vibes are needed for this brave soul.”

Soldier has been at the veterinary hospital for two days where he received fluids to help re-hydrate him as well as medication for infections and pain. On Tuesday, he started to eat – a good sign. He was also able to stand on his own, but has yet to be able to open his eyes.

Once Soldier is released from the veterinary hospital, a rescue group, Auction for a Kaws has arranged a foster home for him.

Checks: Auction for a Kaws 301 Haywood Centre, Unit 7, Greenville SC 29607.

Abbeville County residents are being asked to come forward with any information that could help find Soldier’s owners or any information regarding the operation of dog fighting in the county. The Humane Society of the United States offers a $5000 reward upon the conviction of a reported dog fighter.
