A New York animal welfare agency has stepped in to help a severely injured puppy desperately in need of veterinary care. The Niagara County SPCA alerted Facebook followers to the puppy’s situation in a post on Monday, writing:

On Saturday evening the Niagara County SPCA received a call from Northtowns Veterinary Emergency in regards to a 7-week-old puppy who was badly bitten by a dog he resided with. The owners could not afford the emergency care for the animal, so the hospital called other animal welfare organizations in the area for assistance. No one would take the animal except Niagara County SPCA.

The puppy’s original owners were not able to provide the injured pup with the treatment he needed, so they surrendered him to the shelter. Executive Director Tim Brennan explained:

The owners could not afford to have him treated for the expensive care. They surrendered him to us and we never hesitated to help. Our hearts break for the puppy.

The puppy has lacerations and fractures which will require ongoing treatment. For the moment, he is doing well, but he is not yet out of the woods. The most recent update on his condition reads:

Thank you for all of your love and prayers for our little guy. He had a drain and feeding tube placed and is being trickle fed around the clock to get nutrition in him, while monitoring his drains. He is a fighter, that’s for sure!

Already, over $5,000 has been raised for his veterinary expenses. Learn more about how to help at this link to GoFundMe.
