Before people go tossing their dogs out of their homes or abandoning them on some country road, let’s get the facts out after a second dog tested positive for the coronavirus in Hong Kong.
According to a press release from Hong Kong officials from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, a German shepherd living in the Pok Fu Lam area on Hong Kong Island has been sent into quarantine with another mixed breed dog from the same residence after their owner had been confirmed as being infected.
No positive results were obtained from the mixed breed pooch and neither dog has shown any symptoms of being ill with the virus, but officials will continue to monitor both dogs and conduct repeated tests.
In the Daily Mail, the other pet dog in Hong Kong had been the first to be confirmed as infected with the virus had been repeatedly tested also and tested “weak positive.” Just two days after the 17-year-old Pomeranian was released from quarantine back to his 60-year-old owner, the dog died – likely of old age and nothing to do with the virus affecting dogs.
“The AFCD said the dog’s owner wasn’t willing to allow an autopsy to determine the cause of death but some have suggested the stress of quarantine and the separation from its owner may have contributed.”
Both the World Health Organization and the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention, have said there is no evidence that animals such as cats and dogs can spread the virus. The American Veterinary Medical Association, which is currently advising, “If you are not ill with COVID-19, you can interact with your pet as you normally do.”
Under no circumstances should anyone think that abandoning their pet is acceptable.
