On Sunday, San Antonio Zoo’s oldest elephant celebrated her 60th birthday; reaching an age more than ten years older than the average elephant.
And to celebrate the happy event, the zoo gave her a birthday party celebrated LIVE on Facebook; her shelter area decked out in edible decorations, signs and of course – a huge birthday cake made from vegetables and fruits.
Check it out here:
“It’s a tribute to the care that they get with out staff,” Candace Gutierrez, one of the zoo’s animal care specialists stated. “Their wild counterparts do not live as long because their teeth wear down, their eyesight changes, even their hearing and their skin is sensitive.”
Lucky arrived at the San Antonio Zoo in 1962 and is a sweet girl who enjoys treats and plays elephant fetch. The zoo spends $3,500 a month caring for Lucky which includes feeding her, foot work and veterinary body checkups.
As with most businesses, the zoo is running short of funding. They depend 100% on ticket sales, guest spending, grants and donations to operate. The zoo has temporarily closed down because of the coronavirus pandemic.
