RSPCA finds bloodied, unconscious dog in bathtub

A man is forbidden from owning animals, and has been sentenced to 16 weeks in prison, after RSPCA investigators found a bloodied and unconscious dog in the bathtub of his home. As reported by the Daily Mail, 50-year-old Gary David Bell, of West Yorkshire, severely beat a nine-year-old dog named Smiler.

Inspectors burst into Bell’s home after hearing “heavy breathing” through a window – once inside, they found the injured American Bulldog covered in blood in a bathtub. Not only was Smiler injured, but she had been doused in a household cleaner, adding to her pain and misery.

An inspector had visited Bell’s home after becoming “increasingly concerned” about the dog’s welfare. The dog was rushed to a veterinarian for care – her injuries were extensive:

She was found to have multiple injuries including two large wounds to the top of her head which needed to be stitched, bruising to the head and a loose tooth that needed to be removed. Her eyes were flushed to get rid of any cleaning product.

Bell lost custody of Smiler, who has since recovered from her injuries; she is now living in a new home. Smiler’s abuser was found guilty in December, and sentenced to prison in January.
