In Weoley Castle, Birmingham, United Kingdom, robbers broke into a home on Monday evening and beat the family’s dog to death as they ransacked the house looking for valuables.

According to the Birmingham Mail, the family including their two young children, arrived home to find their home “destroyed” and their Staffordshire bull terrier named Theo cowering by the front door. The dog, described as the family’s “third child,” suffered fatal spinal injuries and internal bleeding and had to be humanely euthanized by the family veterinarian.

Theo was just protecting his home, and the family has been utterly devastated. The evil thugs stole the woman’s jewelry and other valuables, but the worst consequence of the home invasion was the loss of their children’s best friend.

Rest in peace Theo. You are a good boy, and you will be missed.
