The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has offered a reward of $7,500 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person responsible for cruelly shooting a black bear in the head and killing it near St. Mary Parish in Louisiana.
In conjunction with the reward offered by the HSUS, the Acadiana Chapter of Safari Club International is offering up to $2,500, and Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF’s) Operation Game Thief program is offering up to $1,000 for a total of $8,500 in reward money.
On November 9, LDWF agents were notified about a dead black bear off Log Bayou Road near Centerville. Agents found the deceased 350-pound adult male bear; a necropsy revealed he had been shot with a rifle a few days prior.
Louisiana law does not allow the hunting of black bears and stresses the importance of humans and bears safely co-existing.
“Louisiana black bears are only now recovering from nearly being wiped out by overhunting and habitat loss. It is appalling and heartbreaking that someone would callously shoot this bear. We hope our reward helps find the person who committed this despicable act against our treasured state mammal,” wrote Julia Breaux, the Louisiana senior state director of the HSUS.
