Researchers with the University of Granada claim that their study reveals that people who walk their dogs are much more likely to contract Covid-19 than those who don’t. Say what?!
As reported by the New York Post, the researchers’ study revealed up to a 78 percent higher chance of getting Covid-19 for people who engage in dog walking activity. The eye-brow raising claim is the result of survey results from 2086 people. The researchers didn’t just say that walking dogs is “risky behavior,” they claim that dog ownership in and of itself is dangerous, stating “These results point to living with dogs as a strong risk factor for COVID-19 infection.”
Despite the researchers’ dire warning, the American Veterinary Medical Association states:
While we know that certain bacteria and fungi can be carried on fur and hair, we have no examples of where viruses have been transmitted by contact with pet hair or skin and, accordingly, no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can spread to people from the skin or fur of pets.
In fact, the CDC has stated that dogs may get sick FROM Covid-19 infected humans, rather than the other way around. The CDC states:
A small number of pet cats and dogs have been reported to be infected with SARS-CoV-2 in several countries, including the United States. Most of these pets became sick after contact with people with COVID-19.
So don’t fret about the small survey by the University of Granada. There is plenty to worry about in this uncertain climate and what we do know is that dogs are beneficial to emotional well-being, something everyone is in need of these days.
