A rescue effort went horribly wrong for a tiger who was viciously attacked by villagers in India. As reported by the Times of India, a tiger suffered significant injuries when villagers in Pilibhit attacked him with iron bars after the feline wandered away from a nearby tiger reserve.
Things went from bad to worse when forest department officials hit him with two tranquilizer darts – twice the amount that was needed for his safe capture. The five-year-old cat not only sustained internal damage and broken bones from the beating, but he received a potentially lethal dose of tranquilizer.
The forest officials claim that the cat died from the beating, but activists believe he have been saved if not for the high dose sedative which resulted in the big cat’s death just minutes after he was struck. Kaushalendra Singh, a Lucknow-based wildlife activist, told the news agency:
“I suspect that the tiger’s death was an outcome of overdose of tranquilizer. The tiger was hit with two darts, one after another.”
A necropsy report on the tiger is expected to reveal the true cause of death.
