Professional shooters will be slaughtering over 10,000 camels in Australia

Plans are in the works to slaughter more than 10,000 camels who have the misfortune of living in Australia. The animals, referred to as “pests,” will be killed because they drink too much water, and the current fires and drought conditions are not conducive to their continued existence.

The shooting, which will be conducted from helicopters, will begin on Wednesday, reports the New Zealand Herald.

Aboriginal leaders, responding to complaints from residents in communities in the Southern Australian region, have given the go ahead for the massive slaughter operation. The camels to be targeted are said to be feral, and they have been “invading” properties in their desperate attempts to locate water.

Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara lands executive board member Marita Baker told The Australian,

We have been stuck in stinking hot and uncomfortable conditions, feeling unwell, because the camels are coming in and knocking down fences, getting in around the houses and trying to get to water through air conditioners,”

The camel shooting spree is scheduled to last for five days.
