Photos of deceased camel with head inside dried water tank has gone viral

In Rajasthan, India, photos of a thirsty deceased camel with its head hanging inside of a dried up water tank have gone viral. Residents of Barmer confirmed to India.com, that the incident had been reported to officials although that has been denied.

“No such information has reached out to us,” stated Dr. Ganga Dhar Sharma, the Joint Director of Animal Husbandry stated. “We don’t have any presence on social media and hence such news failed to reach out to our department.

Even had it reached us, what could have been done? The owners of these animals set them free to graze and drink water. They neither carry tag on their neck and hence it gets difficult for us to crack the problem.”

Social media participants were outraged at the apathy the government responded. Twitter users accused the minister of being too busy “partying” at private affairs ahead of Rajya Sabha elections.

According to NGO People For Animals, the government has made camels integral parts of tourism but have done little to protect the animals. Water tanks have dried out, and in addition to the loss of camel lives, panthers and other wild animals are dying of thirst.

Camels can survive a long time in the desert without water; the animals dying of thirst however is a first according to local residents.
