Zoo animals are starving

The pandemic inspired shut downs are pushing zoo animals, at dozens of Indonesian parks, to the brink of starvation. As reported by France 24, officials have stated that things are so dire that sacrifices of some animals may be made in order to allow others to survive.

Indonesian Zoo Association spokesman Sulhan Syafi’i explains:

Most zoos relied on ticket sales so when they closed everything collapsed.

And if things don’t improve soon:

“If a few more months pass and we don’t get any aid from the government or other international organisations, then with a heavy heart we’ll have to feed herbivores…to the carnivores.”

Carnivorous animals are already being fed half of their normal portions, and zoo staff have even resorted to killing their own personal livestock to help keep the captive animals alive.

Zoos are attempting to get by on donations, but funds remain inadequate for the huge need. In Malaysia, the zoo association has indicated that “drastic choices about which animals live or die” will be made if things do not improve soon.

  1. I can only hope that this situation with zoos all over the world will finally open people’s eyes about animals kept in zoos for profit. Animals don’t belong in zoos, people!
