Pair of abandoned German shepherds in wilderness captured with ‘missy trap’

In Eldorado County, California, a pair of German shepherds had been abandoned by their owners in the mountains near Highway 50. For two weeks the dogs, who had been dumped near Bridal Veil Falls on a steep mountainside,  were able to survive on their own.

According to the El Dorado County Animal Services, Chief Henry Brzezinski, the dogs would run back into the woods whenever anyone approached them. Animal Control Officer Ashley Bragg created a huge metal crate with a trap door called a “missy trap” and used a remote camera to wait for the dogs to enter the cage.

The hungry pups were lured into the crate with cat food and liver pate mixed with dry dog food.

“It appears the dogs were not only abandoned but also severely neglected,” said  Brzezinski. “We’re thankful to have the dogs safely in our care, but trying to learn more about what occurred and what caused someone to commit this cruel act.”

“The veterinarian confirmed that both of the dogs were malnourished, one severely, and that surgery was needed to remove the metal chain embedded in the neck of one of the dogs. The other dog’s chain was removed by Animal Services clinic staff.  Both dogs received the medical care they needed and were then transported to the Animal Shelter.”

The emaciated dogs will need to gain 20 pounds each. They have been named Toby and Ash by shelter staff and are doing better now and recovering.

“They both were very scared at first, but they’re starting to feel more comfortable, eating and responding to follow up care by our shelter staff. We expect them to fully recover,” said Brzezinski.

Animal Services is asking anyone with information about this case to please contact them at (530) 621-5795.
