In Fort Lauderdale, Florida Kangaroo Jack escaped from his yard after pushing the gate latch and happily hopped along the busy streets of a crowded city late last week. His owner had been at work Thursday when the police sirens blared calling for assistance with a “kangaroo.”

According to CNN, several people called 911 with one person saying “the strangest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.” After police captured him and placed him in the squad car, he was transported to the horse stables used for the police department’s mounted unit. Later that day, he was taken into custody by state wildlife officials.

Kangaroo Jack’s owner, Anthony Macias, 24, is facing second-degree misdemeanor charges – allowing the escape and for not having records to show how he acquired the animal. He also faces a civil penalty for not having a permit to own a kangaroo.

The friendly ‘roo is not allowed to go home with Macias since Fort Lauderdale does not allow residents to keep kangaroos as pets. Zoo Miami says there is no room for him. Meanwhile Macias is worried about Jack’s well-being and has been raising funds to help him get his pet back.

Macias is scheduled to appear in court on August 10. If found guilty, he could face up to 60 days in jail and a maximum fine of $500.

We hope you stay safe Kangaroo Jack.

  1. I thought it was illegal to “own” wild animals. If it’s not federally, it should be! Wild animals have no business being in captivity. He should be sent to a sanctuary. Wild animals are not pets!!
