In Contra Costa County, California, the owner of a dog training company was sentenced to two years in state prison. On Friday, Judge Patricia Scanlon sentenced NorCal K9 owner, Garry Reynolds, 39, after a jury found him guilty of four felonies – animal cruelty for each dog under his care and supervision of his dog training facility.
Jurors found Reynolds to have been criminally negligent in the care of four animals at his Antioch-based company: Gunner, a Doberman; Favor, a Cane Corso; Zeus, a German Shepherd; and Rambo “Bo,” a Labro-Poodle.
In addition, the judge denied a motion to reduce the charges to misdemeanors and motion for a new trial.
An investigation of NorCal K9 began in 2018 after a report was received by the police concerning the death of the dog named Gunnar. The dog had been in the care of Reynolds at a rented property. A necropsy revealed the dog died of heat stroke and heat stress. When authorities arrived, they found rotten chicken meat in the kennels, urine and feces in the home area and improper use of the house ventilation system.
“The conditions at 5200 Lone Tree Way were unsuitable for any animal. Antioch officials testified at the trial and reviewed with the jury that rotten raw chicken meat was found in various dogs’ kennels, urine and feces were not picked up or disposed of in a sanitary manner, and the house’s ventilation system was not properly used,” a District Attorney news release says. “When officers arrived on June 25 to the property, the weather in Antioch was extremely warm and the ventilation system in the house was not being used.”
According to the East Bay Times, six other dogs involved in the animal cruelty charges had to be euthanized following an extended stay at the Antioch Animal shelter. One other dog was released back to his owner.
“I am satisfied the defendant will serve time in state prison due to his extreme negligence and disregard for the animals under his company’s care,” Deputy District Attorney Arsh Singh stated.
“This case should serve as a wakeup call for any dog training company in our community. Animals deserve to be protected and treated well. Our Office will not tolerate the abuse of any animal.”
