The owner of a dog training company in Contra Costa County, California was found guilty this week on four felony counts of animal cruelty according to the Contra County District Attorney’s Office. Garry Reynolds, 39, faces up to ten years in prison.
According to NbcNews, Reynolds was found guilty of neglect and unsuitable living conditions for four dogs left in his care. The jury also found Reynolds not guilty on three charges of felony animal cruelty.
An investigation of NorCal K9 began in 2018 after a report was received by the police concerning the death of a three-and-a-half-year old German shepherd name Gunnar. The dog had been in the care of Reynolds at a rented property. A necropsy revealed the dog died of heat stroke. When authorities arrived, they found rotten chicken meat in the kennels, urine and feces in the home area and improper use of the house ventilation system.
“The conditions at 5200 Lone Tree Way were unsuitable for any animal. Antioch officials testified at the trial and reviewed with the jury that rotten raw chicken meat was found in various dogs’ kennels, urine and feces were not picked up or disposed of in a sanitary manner, and the house’s ventilation system was not properly used,” a District Attorney news release says. “When officers arrived on June 25 to the property, the weather in Antioch was extremely warm and the ventilation system in the house was not being used.”
Dogs were being kept in stacked kennels in the kitchen next to garbage littering the home both inside and out. Nine dogs were removed from the property. Three of the dogs had to be humanely euthanized due to their poor condition.
A co-defendant in the case, Devon Ashby, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor animal cruelty charges.
Sentencing is scheduled for the Spring. Prosecutors will be asking the judge to ban Reynolds from having contact with any animals for the next ten years.
