Earlier this week, more than 170 dogs from a suspected puppy mill were rescued from “Hell on Earth” in north Mississippi. Badly neglected dogs were found living in dilapidated make-shift wooden structures located at a woman’s residence in Coldwater.
On February 3, the Tunica Humane Society alerted its Facebook followers about the massive rescue effort, writing:
Thanks to an amazing team of volunteers and the awesome support of the Tate County Sheriff’s Department, we did a wonderful thing today. We removed over 170 dogs from Hell on Earth…Today, these dogs can finally breathe fresh air, many of them for the first time in their lives.
Sandy Williams, with the animal shelter, disgusted by the deplorable conditions, stated:
“Crushes me to think that these dogs this is all that they have ever known, they’ve probably ever known. They’ve probably never been in the grass just a breath of fresh air is everything to them.”
Sunny Meadows Safe Haven for Pets is assisting in the rescue effort, dubbed Operation Breathe. Right now, the agencies are working to get the dogs the vetting that they need – after that, many of them will be handed over to adoption partners which can help find safe, loving homes.
The name of the woman running the suspected puppy mill operation has not been released. According to WMC Action News, signs near the property indicate that Ashcraft Kennels was in business there. The business owner has not been charged.
