Social media expressed their outrage on Saturday after a live pig was pushed off a tower at the Meixin Red Wine Town theme park in Chongqing, China. The terrorized 165-pound pig, whose legs were bound together and a red cape tied around neck, was launched from a 223 feet tower.
Four men hauled the pig to the top of the tower. After he was pushed off the tower, the pig could be seen bouncing up and down squealing in sheer panic. Audience members below cheered and laughed. After the pig was brought back up to the tower and untied, he appeared to have been unconscious.
According to BBCNews, the pig didn’t move after the stunt, and was reportedly sent to a slaughterhouse. The stunt caused online anger – reflective of the changing attitude in China about animal cruelty. In response to the widespread criticism the park issued a statement acknowledging the outrage:
“We sincerely accept netizens’ criticism and advice and apologise to the public,” it said. “We will improve [our] marketing of the tourist site, to provide tourists with better services.”
There are few animal cruelty laws in China. Although some people defended the incident on social media saying it was no different than killing a pig for slaughter, most people condemned the action calling it “vulgar.” It’s one thing to kill an animal for slaughter, commenters wrote, but it’s just plain animal cruelty when treated like this for entertainment.
As if the slaughterhouses aren’t the most egregious methods for intelligent animals to be killed, adding to their misery in stunts like this make humans even more despicable the way they treat animals.
