In Salem, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife announced a $6,150 reward for information leading to the identity of the person who shot a breeding male wolf leaving the pack without a breeding male. Wally Sykes, associated with the Northeast Oregon Ecosystems, hopes the sizable reward offer helps to “inspire some citizen to come forward with information…”
According to Opb.org., the black wolf was killed in the Keating Wildlife Management Unit on or about September 24, 2020 and had been fitted with a GPS collar in December 2018. It was the known breeding male for the Cornucopia Pack of wolves. He was found dead on a forest service road in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest and had been shot.
The wolf and the breeding female had raised three pups the prior year, and now it is feared the future of the Cornucopia pack is uncertain. The population of the wolves in Oregon are protected and in 2015 were nearly extinct.
