‘Opie is on his way to recovery’ after someone left him in parking lot to die

Only a few days ago, in a thickly populated Houston suburb, bystanders ignored the plight of an emaciated, suffering dog. Lying on the hot macadam on a boiling hot day, people just walked around him – that is until someone notified a volunteer from ThisIsHouston.

Emaciated, lethargic and full of lacerations, the eight-month-old puppy dubbed Opie was rushed to an emergency veterinarian hospital where life saving treatment was administered.  An examination showed the dog had walked so long on the blistering hot pavement that he developed open, bloody sores on his paw pads. And then he collapsed on the hot pavement as the sun beamed down on him and had a heat stroke – yet people in the area never bothered to help, except for Sabrina; someone who cared.

In order to clear Opie’s stomach from rocks he had been eating as a last resort, a gastric lavage was performed. The surgeons were able to break up some of the foreign contents in his stomach, and even though some mineral material remains, it is not stuck together and is expected to be eliminated. It doesn’t appear that Opie will need surgery.

“Opie is well on his way to recovery! He’s come such a long way in a very short short period of time. We cannot imagine what he felt like on a daily basis, how hungry he must’ve been as the minutes slowly passed to get to this point. People walking by, not caring or doing anything to help him. He must’ve felt like he had done something wrong and was being punished. You didn’t deserve this, Opie and we will make it up to you! We are so sorry you were left to slowly wilt away and die while people stepped over you. We are so sorry that humans showed you how much they don’t care about you,” the organization posted on their Facebook page.

Opie will be placed on a carefully supervised high calorie diet with prescription food given to him several times a day to help him gain weight. We will continue to watch his recovery.
