One dog’s Christmas Wish

Every stray has a tale. If they could talk, their stories of abandonment, loneliness, fear, and pain would break our hearts. But beyond the broken spirits and scarred faces, is a resilience of spirit and the ability to love again without judgment.

According to a recent post from Best Friends Animal Society,  800,000 dogs and cats are killed in shelters each year. Florida is number three out of five in the states with the highest kill records; killing 66,000 animals killed annually simply because no one wants them. Florida is preceded by California and Texas which is number one with 125,000 documented killings each year.

Ellie Mae, a brown and white seven-year-old female pit mix almost shared the same tragic fate of so many other Florida shelter dogs. She was found wandering outside the Tampa, Florida area in the late fall of 2020. She had a horrible skin rash, open wounds from an unknown source and a bad case of cherry eye. No one knows where she came from or why she was dumped in such poor condition.

All these injuries and the cost attached to them would have been daunting for any rescue, but Anastasia Devaris, a veteran in rescuing dogs needing extensive medical care, did not turn her back on Ellie Mae. She took her in, and in conjunction with Shar Pei Nation, a local rescue, got Ellie immediately to a vet and into boarding.

Ellie Mae received treatment for her skin rash, other injuries and cherry eye at the Temple Terrace Animal Hospital in Tampa, Florida. She is recovering with the help of antibiotics and follow up treatments but is still stuck in boarding. She is described as sweet and loving and appreciative of any act of kindness shown to her.

Ellie Mae’s Christmas wishes are simple. She is not looking for a palace to live in; she just wants a warm bed to sleep in, a full belly, and her medical needs met; and most of all she wants  to have a family to call her own. Each day she is hopeful, and each night she goes to sleep disappointed.

As she lays her head down to sleep in her kennel, she drifts off with the words of that age-old classic Christmas song playing in her mind, “I’ll be home for Christmas, if only in my dreams.”

If you want to be the one to give Ellie Mae her Christmas wish and open your home to her, you can contact Shar Pei-Nation Rescue at [email protected] or 305-776-4425.
