A puppy suffering in the elements, behind an abandoned house in DeSoto County, Mississippi, was rescued by a police officer who noticed it chained to a tree in frigid temperatures. The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department recounted what led up to the puppy’s rescue, writing:

Y’all might cry when you read this… 🤭😥
While patrolling a neighborhood, Deputy Andrew Hurst saw a puppy in the backyard of an abandoned house 🐶🐕

The dog was chained to a tree with no shelter, food, or water 😓

According to the Sheriff’s Department, the pup was soaking wet and it was only 36 degrees outside.

The Department commended the deputy for his life-saving action, writing:

No doubt Deputy Hurst saved this puppy’s life. Thank you Deputy Hurst!

And thanked another deputy for capturing a photo of the hero:

And thank you to Deputy William Hungate for taking this incredible photo💙
