At a beach in Melbourne, Australia, a kangaroo was mauled and nearly killed by an off leash dog at the Fisherman’s Beach on Sunday. The kangaroo nearly drowned as it was chased into the water by a dog that was able to push the kangaroo’s head under water.
According to the Daily Mail, Genene Priest filmed the heartbreaking encounter as the brown kelpie began chasing the kangaroo.
“The kangaroo came along the beach so swiftly and suddenly from behind, that I’m sure the owner of the dog who swam in couldn’t have seen it before their dog did,” Genene wrote on Facebook accompanied by the videos and photos.
The poor kangaroo was so scared, he remained in the water, but the dog wouldn’t give up his pursuit and swam after the marsupial. At that point, the dog attacked the kangaroo and pushed its head under the water. The dog then swam back to shore, as the kangaroo struggled to stay afloat. When finally the kangaroo mustered up the courage to return to the beach, another dog, a border collie chased it although that dog, according to Priest, was just curious and not on the attack.
And once again, the kangaroo had to retreat into the water; finally he was able to jump around the grassy areas and hop to safety.
Come on guys – leash your dogs. Wildlife has just as much right to inhabit the areas – leave them alone.
