No charges in rubber band case

The owners of a dog, who was seriously injured by rubber bands left on his snout, will not face any charges. As reported by KFVS News, the Jackson County State’s Attorney determined that there was no malice on the part of the family who owned the Shih Tzu, named Wyatt.

The bands on Wyatt’s snout were so embedded that he had to undergo extensive surgery to have them removed; the veterinarian believed that they had been on Wyatt’s snout for weeks. The dog’s former owners claim that a seven-year-old child in the house “didn’t know better,” and liked to try to braid the dog’s hair.

The state attorney called the incident an “unfortunate situation,” and “not a malicious act on anyone’s part.” As such, nobody in the family is facing criminal charges.

The injured dog recovered at St. Francis Communty Animal Rescue & Education, in southern Illinois. On Thursday, the group expressed dismay over the state attorney’s decision, writing:

This is State’s Attorney, Carr’s decision on Wyatt’s case.
Clearly the system set up to address animal abuse & neglect did not work for Wyatt.
We are heartbroken & in complete disbelief!

Wyatt, and the family’s other dogs, have all been surrendered. Wyatt continues to recover from his injuries.

  1. How convenient there was a 7 y/o in the home to blame this on. Even IF it was done by the 7 y/o, the vet said the bands had been on the snout for weeks. How did the adults not see the dog was in distress? Negligence! And now ALL the family’s dogs have been surrendered. Why? To avoid further scrutiny? Very suspicious.

  2. I don’t get it: NO consequences for torturing the furbaby? How did he eat or drink whilst he was “banded”??? If the bands were so embedded that it took surgery to get them out of his snout, then it seems to me an adult had to have placed them. Children generally are NOT capable of tightening anything that tight!!!

I am disgusted with the outcome of this case. I think someone in that family needs to do jail time and NOONE in that family should EVER have companion animals!!!
