In Brick Township, New Jersey, a man who left his dog out on a balcony for hours in the sweltering heat in July 2018, was sentenced to jail and probation on Friday.

According to the Asbury Park Press, Jonathan Correa, 31, will spend 270 days in the Ocean County Jail as a condition of four years supervised probation. During this time, he will not be allowed to own or keep any animals. He will also perform 180 hours of community service. In addition, he must also pay restitution to the township for $1,735.

On July 1, 2018, Correa left his one-year-old pit bull named Princess outside on a balcony where temperatures soared over 97 degrees for an unspecified time. Early that evening, neighbors spotted the dog and called authorities. When police arrived, Princess was “unconscious and in severe distress.”

Police rushed the dog to a veterinarian where she died two days later of heat stroke complications.

Rest in peace Princess.
