Chinese “sky” lanterns are believed to have sparked a devastating blaze that destroyed a German zoo’s barn, killing dozens of animals. According to multiple sources, the monkey house at the Krefeld Zoo was completely destroyed by the fire, and more than 30 animals perished.
On the zoo’s Facebook page, the devastating news was released:
our worst fears have become reality. There are no surviving animals in the monkey house.
The Gorilla Garden has been spared. Kidogo and his family are fine.
Later, on the website, it was noted that two chimpanzees somehow escaped death:
Fire destroyed monkey house completely – two chimpanzees have survived ***
The chimpanzees Bally and Limbo miraculously survived the devastating fire. They are only slightly injured and are now housed in two boxes in the Gorilla Garten. They are looked after by several zoo veterinarians.
Gerd Hoppmann, the head of the city’s police, told reporters about the suspected cause of the horrible blaze,
“People reported seeing those sky lanterns flying at low altitude near the zoo and then it started burning.”
Burned remnants of the lanterns were found near the barn that was destroyed. Among the dead are birds, bats, monkeys and apes. The zoo is closed until January 2 – find the website at this link.
