A neglected and ailing puppy is fighting for her life after being abandoned outside of a North Carolina animal shelter. The young pit bull mix, dubbed Cricket, weighs just two pounds and someone left her on the driveway outside of the Wake County Animal Shelter late Sunday night, reports CBS 17 News.
The ailing pup was discovered by employees who were working late, and she was rushed to a veterinarian for care.
Her condition so dismal the first night that her very survival was in question. Cindy Johnson, owner and veterinarian at Peak City Veterinary Hospital, said:
“I think the biggest hurdle is going to be just getting her through tonight. If we can start getting her to eat on her own, that’s really our biggest concern right now. We really need to get nourishment into her. I think the next 24 hours are going to be the most critical for her.”
Perfectly Imperfect Pets has taken the ailing pup under its wing. On Monday, the rescue group wrote:
Imagine finding a 2 lb puppy at the end of your driveway that was abandon there overnight. Cricket is believed to be 7 weeks old, extremely dehydrated, very malnourished with cuts and fly strikes on her body.
