In Russia’s Kamchatka region, crew members of a nuclear submarine shot and killed a mother bear and her cub on Sunday. A video shared on social media showed the bear and her cub swimming towards the submarine and then sitting on its deck.
According to the Moscow Times, a sharpshooter was deployed to “neutralize the wild animals”. After one shot is fired, the baby bear could be seen falling into the water. The bears had come over from the nearby village of Rybachiy. The bears were allegedly shot because the mother “was very emaciated and wounded and the cub would allegedly become aggressive without its mother.”
Social media has accused the navy of unneeded animal cruelty. Conservationists say the bears were looking for food. Last year 50 polar bears arrived at another Russian village looking for food. Climate change could be the reason the bears have been approaching people and villages.
