A sheriff’s investigation at a property in Paradise Valley, Montana, found 17 sled dogs neglected and abandoned. According to the Stafford Animal Shelter, once arriving at the property, rescuers found the dogs in various stages of emotional and physical distress.

Most of the dogs had been tethered outside on six-foot chains and lived in plastic barrels. Several of the dogs had broken free and were injured. Rescuers took in 12 Alaskan huskies, two Jack Russells and one Australian Cattle dog/heeler. All of the dogs are extremely gentle and demonstrated no aggression towards their rescuers.

The dogs are now available for adoption through “Foster 2 Adopt” program pending a legal resolution to the case. Would be adopters with prior experience with retired sled dogs and those patient enough to work with these special needs dogs will be given preference.

“They are no longer working dogs. Adopters will need to remember these dogs are accustomed to being outside, they have not been trained to walk on leashes, hardwood floors are a new experience for them, they are not potty trained …etc. They are highly adaptive, intelligent, they like car rides, enjoy other dogs and humans and they deserve a better life,” the shelter posted on their Facebook page.

All available dogs will be posted on the Stafford Animal Shelter Facebook page shortly and begin to accept applications then.

The dogs have all been examined, have been given their vaccinations and medications if needed. They are relaxing in style on soft beds, listening to soft music and adjusting to the promise of better lives.
