In Cedar Springs, Michigan, a 43-year-old man has been charged with a felony complaint – “killing/torturing animals without just cause.” Matthew Clay Goldsmith faces up to four years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

According to Wzzm13.com, the dog got loose and was shot after he strayed into Goldsmith’s yard on November 4. Cindy D. Holliday, who owned the Siberian husky, Kita, had already been searching for her dog and calling her when she heard the gunshot.

“She just happened to get away from me while I was putting her leash on. We did hear the dog scream and then a gunshot was fired immediately after, while I and my friend were on the other side of the house calling the dog,” Holliday stated.

Kita had been a rescue dog Holliday adopted four months prior, when the dog got loose and killed a chicken in the Goldsmith’s yard. Holliday said she offered to replace the chickens, pay for them or do whatever her neighbors wanted, however they didn’t seem to be interested.

Sadly, Kita paid the price.
