Processing plants across the nation are being shuttered because of the Covid-19 pandemic and the mass slaughter of pigs, with nowhere to go, begins. As reported by MSN News, U.S. Representative Collin Peterson. chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, has ordered the tremendous cull.

In a call to reporters, Peterson stated:

We don’t want to euthanize hogs, but we’ve got no choice. I asked them to do it. So if people are upset, they can be upset with me.”

Beginning this Wednesday, 13,000 piglets per day will be killed at one Minnesota slaughterhouse. Nationwide, over 160,000 pigs PER DAY will be killed. Iowa pig farmer, Lance Schiele, said:

It’s probably cruel and unusual punishment to have to destroy them when they are little. As big of a mess we’re having, in six months we are going to need this pork. I don’t know how we’re going to get there.”

The current situation is expected to create food shortages in the months to come.
