In Kinmel Bay in Conwy County, United Kingdom, the man who kicked and dragged his dog along the ground “like a rag doll” had his jail sentenced shortened on Friday after an appeal.
According to BBCNews, John Trafford, 39, the dog’s new owner, was videoed swinging the defenseless French bulldog named Ronnie over his head by the leash and then slamming the dog on the ground before repeatedly hitting him. The egregious cruelty inflicted upon the dog had occurred just one day after Trafford purchased the dog.
District Judge Gwyn Jones described Trafford as “totally and utterly out of control” after viewing the video when he abused the dog. The judge thanked eyewitnesses for becoming involved at the time and most likely saving the small dog’s life.
Trafford was originally sentenced in May to 20 weeks in jail and banned from owning or caring for any pets for the next 15 years. After his appeal, the jail term was reduced to 12-weeks and a ten year ban on owning or caring for any pets.
When asked by the court for an explanation leading to the violence and cruelty towards the dog, Trafford stated he had become angry when Ronnie “got spooked” and ran off, and was “devastated and ashamed of himself.” Prosecutors stated Trafford made no excuses to defend his behavior at the earlier hearings.
When officers arrived at Trafford’s home when the incident first occurred, the dog did not appear to be in distress. Ronnie has since been adopted by a new family.
