An Irish rider has been sentenced for animal cruelty after brutally whipping a horse into exhaustion at a track in France. According to multiple sources, 32-year-old rider Kevin Thornton was sentenced to a one year suspended jail sentence for the charge of “serious harm or cruelty towards a domesticated animal” which stemmed from the 2016 incident which claimed the life of Flogas Sunset Cruise.
The 10-year-old horse died after being forced to run twice around a track at full speed. In court, attendees heard that Flogas could be heard “whinnying to its death” on that fateful day in October, reports The Sun.
A lawyer recounted the anger of other track professionals that day, stating:
“All the riders and the lads, everybody was outraged to the point that Mr Thornton had to be exfiltrated because anger was rising among the professionals.”
Thornton claims that he would “never hurt a horse.” In addition to the suspended jail sentence, Thornton is prohibited from competing for five years and banned from owning an animal for life.
