A 57-year-old Berks County, Pennsylvania, man killed his dog, set fire to his home and committed suicide early Monday morning. According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the man who died is identified as Erik Johnson.
The authorities report that Johnson first killed his dog, and then intentionally ignited a fire in his home at 72 Westview Terrace in Womelsdorf. The man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. As reported by Lehigh Valley News, the tragic series of events were planned.
The Covid-19 pandemic, which has shut down countless businesses and quarantined people to their homes, is expected to cause an increase in suicides as people lose jobs, and worry over the widespread virus. KOIN News reports that the authorities in Portland, Oregon, have already seen an uptick in suicide related calls since the beginning of the pandemic.
People are encouraged to check in on friends and family during this difficult time. If you or someone you know is in need of him, please reach out to the suicide hotline.
