On Friday night, a North Carolina man drowned after entering the water of Tennessee’s Watauga Lake to rescue a dog who jumped off of a boat. As reported by the Charlotte Observer, 52-year-old Eric Jordan began to struggle after entering the water to retrieve a dog who had jumped into the lake from a moving boat.

According to a news release from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Jordan, a passenger on the boat, entered the water while the boat was still in motion. A good Samaritan on a nearby houseboat was able to pull the man from the water, but it was too late. CPR was administered but Jordan passed away.

There is no information about the fate of the dog who jumped into the lake.
