In Charlotte County, Florida, a man from Palm Island was arrested on Wednesday after leaving his 17-year-old dog in the trunk of his SUV overnight for 13 hours in a parking lot.
James Granato, 77, has been charged with two felony animal cruelty charges in the abuse and neglect of the Siberian Husky. According to WinkNews, Granato told Charlotte County Animal Control he had just arrived in Florida with his wife and the dog.
He said his dog had lost the use of his legs and had been constantly crying in pain, and Granato didn’t want to disturb his neighbors with the dog’s cries, so he put the dog in his vehicle and parked it in an employee lot on Palm Island.
“Snippy,” a grey and white husky was left in his owners’ vehicle for 13 hours. “It’s a 17-year-old husky so they don’t tolerate the heat as well as some other dogs might,” said Reannon Juergensen with Charlotte County Animal Control.
An investigation revealed Granato had a history of neglect with Snippy who had previously been diagnosed with a mass in his ear and often became infected. Granato did not seek veterinarian treatment which had been recommended.
When brought to the veterinarian, Snippy had significant discharge from his ear due to a tumor as well as his hind legs no longer able to move. The dog was then euthanized
Charlotte County’s Animal Control Unit is expected to charge Granato with one count of Cruelty to Animals and one count of Confinement/Abandonment of an Animal against James and Sue Gail Granato.
