A 25-year-old man has been charged with felony aggravated animal cruelty after authorities stated he beat up his girlfriend’s Shih Tzu dog with a belt. Lewiel Irmani was arrested on Sunday and remains in jail pending a $20,000 bond.
According to a news release issued by DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, the dog named Bella, suffered three fractures to her ribs, a fracture to her left eye socket and bruising around the dorsal pelvis. She also had severe injuries to her mouth and teeth; she only can receive food and water via a syringe.
Irmani’s girlfriend had returned to the couple’s home on September 5 and allegedly found her dog lying lifeless in the corner. She ordered her boyfriend to rush the dog to the veterinarian for treatment. Supposedly Bella had gone to the bathroom on the floor, and Irmani “whooped her in the mouth” at least five times.
Irmani and his girlfriend had taken the injured dog to the VCA Arboretum View Animal Hospital who contacted authorities at the Woodbridge Police Department reporting the abuse.
“We take charges of animal cruelty very seriously and anyone accused of such acts will face serious felony charges. Thanks to the outstanding care Bella received, however she still has a way to go, she appears to be on the road to recovery,” Berlin stated in the press release.
Bella and the couple’s other dogs are currently in the care of Naperville Animal Control.
