In Pembroke Pines, Florida, a 47-year-old man has been charged with grand theft and resisting recovery of stolen property for taking a ten-week-old puppy from a pet store.

According to the Sun Sentinel,  Vahid McLaughlin was caught on Petland’s surveillance cameras on Monday taking the tiny Pomapoo (Pomeranian and Poodle mix). Employees in the pet store told authorities the suspect came to look at puppies and went through the usual process of purchasing a dog – showing his identification as well as filling out financing information.

Suddenly, McLaughlin became possessive of the puppy and refused to give it back to employees. Pushing everyone out of his way, McLaughlin then fled from the store after putting the puppy in his backpack.

“He was in a cardboard box in his own urine,” Petland Manager Stephani Victor told Local 10 News. “He did not look good. He was unresponsive, he wasn’t moving, he looked very skinny, he looked hypoglycemic, his gums were white.”

The puppy, named Toby was recovered two days later and returned to the pet store, but on Wednesday he died. The veterinarian who treated Toby stated he died of hypoglycemia due to undernourishment.
