A Florida man is facing charges after he accidentally broke a bear’s back, resulting in the need for the animal to be euthanized. As reported by Click Orlando, Alejandro Castellano fired a .22 caliber rifle at the bear, who had gotten into his trash can outside of his Daytona Beach home.

Castellano claims that he was merely trying to scare the bear away, but he wound up striking the bear, who collapsed and dragged himself out of the yard. Responding wildlife officials found the bear grievously injured, with a broken back. The decision to end the black bear’s life was made by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers, and a biologist.

Castellano is facing a second-degree misdemeanor for violating a Florida black bear conservation administrative code.
