A Utah man is facing felony charges for severely beating his dog, Zeus. As reported by KUTV News, 25-year-old Devin Jordan Spoelstra is facing a third-degree animal torture felony for the abuse of his dog. The charges followed damning footage from surveillance video at Spoelstra’s apartment complex.

Detectives working the case stated that the video showed Spoelstra picking Zeus up and slamming him into the ground. The man is also accused of repeatedly punching the dog in the head, and holding his snout closed while pulling Zeus off the ground by his leash. When questioned, Spoelstra claimed that he was trying to “gain dominance” because Zeus wouldn’t listen to him.

According to the Salt Lake County Animal Control, the beating left Zeus with blood in his urine. Spoelstra was jailed on $50,000 bail.
