Man accused of fatally shooting police K9 has been booked into jail

The man accused of killing a Lakewood police K9 on August 13 has been booked into the Pierce County, Washington, jail. According to KOMO News, the suspect, Dyrell Swinson, faces multiple charges, including: second-degree murder, three counts of first-degree assault for firing a firearm at police officers, one count of harming a police dog and one count of second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.

Ronja had been tracking the suspect, who was wanted for a homicide which occurred a day before. The accused man exchanged gunfire with the police and Ronja was hit. She died a short time later. The suspect also sustained injuries which resulted in him being admitted to an area hospital. After he was released from the facility, he was taken to jail.

The Tacoma News Tribune reports that the 27-year-old suspect is a felon with gang ties, as well as a sex-offender who trafficked children.
