A loyal camel walked more than 100 miles for seven days in the China desert to find his way home on Wednesday to his former owners who had sold him to another livestock herdsman nearly nine months ago.

According to the translation from Bayan Nur Daily,  the previous owners sold the aged camel in October, but the “homesick” camel ran away eight months after he arrived at his new home in Bayannur 106 miles away. The camel started his way home on June 27 because he was obviously dissatisfied with his new surroundings as well as missing his home.

His journey took him through mountains and rivers, crossing over a fence and along a high speed highway. When he stopped in a field, he was covered with scars and open sores. On July 3, the camel arrived a Bayin Wendul mountain home where a herdsman gave him grain and grass, cleaned up his wounds and temporarily kept him in the man’s own camel group. Meanwhile the news of the camel’s arduous journey carried back to the previous owners

The original  camel owners, Temur and Naren, were extremely sad when they saw the photos of their camel’s home alone taken by passers-by. One week later, they contacted the buyer and agreed to exchange a different camel for the loyal one and bring him home forever.

The couple are shown wrapping a Hada, a traditional Mongolian ceremonial scarf, around the camel’s neck, meaning that the animal has officially become part of the family.
