The DeRidder Animal Shelter in Beauregard Parish, Louisiana was vandalized, kerosene poured on pet food, equipment stolen and the shelter dogs let loose over the weekend.

On the Humane Society of Louisiana’s Facebook page, the organization shared the tragic photos on Wednesday showing the damage inside of the shelter.

“Besides breaking and entering the shelter, the suspects stole a computer and modem, removed all but one of the security cameras, trashed the facility, poured kerosene on the pet food, and let all the dogs out their kennels. Fortunately, all the dogs remained close to the shelter, were unharmed, and were immediately picked up and placed in foster homes.”

The main areas of the shelter were heavily vandalized. All of the dog food had been contaminated with the kerosene as were shelves of food designated for the elderly.

Jeff Dorson, executive director of the Humane Society of Louisiana, has directed money from a recent fundraising event to purchase and send four new dog and cat traps, disinfectant and vouchers to spay and neuter eight  shelter pets.

In addition, the Humane Society has offered a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the responsible person(s).

Fortunately the five dogs at the shelter have all been rescued and are being placed in foster homes while the shelter is repaired.

If anyone has any information as to the suspects in the crime, contact DeRidder Police Department at 337-462-8911. Share this information; someone out there knows something. Be the voice for those who cannot speak.

    Do they have insurance?

Typically, generally, general insurance will cover damages for burglary, theft and associated damages with an incident such as this.
